St. Norbert College will be hosting the 2014 American Cancer Society Relay for Life of De Pere on Saturday April 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Schuldes Sports Center. This year’s theme is “superhero.”
Relay for Life is a combined community effort between St. Norbert College’s organization Colleges Against Cancer and the American Cancer Society’s community relay team.
Bryahna Rambo ’15, president of Colleges Against Cancer, said, “This year we are hoping to have over 400 participants and reach our goal of raising $75,000.”
This is St. Norbert College’s 17th year hosting the Relay for Life, and it is the largest campus event that takes place during the year.
This year’s Relay will feature the traditional highlights that take place during the day, including the survivor lap, a victory lap for cancer survivors to celebrate their courageous battle and a balluminaria ceremony that will pay tribute to those affected by cancer.
“As a cancer survivor, my favorite part of the ceremony is the survivor lap and walking with everyone together. It’s an amazing experience,” said Rambo.
The annual “Dude Looks Like a Lady” competition will also take place at this year’s event, except to fit with the “superhero” theme it has been renamed to “Dude Looks Like a Damsel in Distress.” There will also be haircuts, massages, balloon animals, a DJ, a photo booth and various other activities going on throughout the day.
Students on campus are encouraged to form their own teams to participate in the Relay or can also join by registering individually or with another on-campus group. This year registration is $10 per person. Participants can then fundraise with their teammates to raise money for the event.
Participants looking to join a team are also invited to join the Colleges Against Cancer team “The Tumornators.”
