Cuffing season, according to Urban Dictionary, occurs “during the fall and winter months, when people who would normally rather be single or promiscuous find themselves along with the rest of the world desiring to be ‘cuffed’ or tied down by a serious relationship. The cold weather and prolonged indoor activity causes singles to become lonely and desperate to be cuffed.”
A simpler definition is that in the winter people become lonely, so they want to be in a relationship.. This especially happens during the winter months because everyone is forced to stay inside. Although people try to remain upbeat and friendly, despite the temperature being so cold that not wearing mittens might result in losing a finger,, people tend to pair up like they are preparing for Noah’s ark.
However, when the weather becomes warmer, there is no longer that need for these people to feel attached to someone or to have another person around. Spring is the end of cuffing season and is usually when many breakups occur.
If people were to look at the relationships, or lack thereof, around them they would realize the pattern of cuffing season happens quite regularly. Of course, most people, do not realize there is a season for this and think the break-ups just happen naturally. I have personally seen this happen, but I never knew there was an actual name for the season until recently.
If you are one of the people who begin to date someone just so you do not feel alone during the winter months, please do us all a favor and get a pet. There is no reason to mess with someone’s emotions because you happen to feel a little lonelier in the cold months.
We all are lonely in winter, even those of us who are in relationships. The weather is horrible for all of us, and no one wants to deal with the crappiness of walking from class to class in the freezing cold.
For those of you that have been a part of this phenomenon without knowing it, at least you were not alone in the winter months, and you are free in the warm spring weather. You can shed the comfort zone of sweatpants for freedom inducing shorts. Also, you are not alone. Many people are going through the end of cuffing season,, and even more are coming out of their caves and preparing for the warmth of spring.
Life continually comes and goes in waves or seasons of happiness, sadness, coldness and warmth. Whatever season you may be in, just know there is always a new season coming and a fresh start around the corner.
