For those who like interactive entertainment, the period from Sept. to Dec. is prime time for new games, as companies like to release their best games in time for the holidays. Here is a list of the big names to look out for.
For those who like first-person shooters, “Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare” is the newest game in the monolith “Call of Duty” franchise. Rather than take place in modern times or the near future, “Advanced Warfare” aims to take place in the far future where there is a mix between modern kinetic firearms and laser weapons. The single-player campaign seems to try and top its predecessors by getting big name actors like Kevin Spacey to model for characters. The focus of the story seems to be on a private military company’s exploits and how noble they really are. Sledgehammer Games is looking to make the game feel new again by giving players high-tech jetpacks and other equipment. It is looking to come out Nov. 4, 2014 for all modern platforms.
For those who like fighting games, “Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U” is the newest game in the “Smash Bros.” franchise since “Super Smash Bros. Brawl” which came out in 2008. This game pits many of Nintendo’s most favorite characters against each other as they try to knock each other off of platforms and off the screen. New fighters in this game include Little Mac from the “Punch-Out!” series, Mega Man from the “Mega Man” series, and even the Trainer from “Wii Fit.” Rather than include a story mode, these games seem to focus on the gameplay with more pick up and play modes being added to each game. The 3DS version marks the first time this series has appeared on a portable console. The 3DS version will come out Oct. 3, 2014 and the Wii U version will come out some time holiday 2014.
For fans of horror games, “Alien: Isolation” is a game that takes place in the “Alien” series of movies and stars Amanda Ripley as she looks for her mother Ellen Ripley. Rather than most “Alien” games, which take a more action-y, pace, this aims to replicate the original film by featuring only the signature radar and no weapons. The object is to find information about your mother’s whereabouts while avoiding the titular Alien. There is supposedly only one Xenomorph in the entire game but it aims to hunt the player by their sound and by sight. After “Alien: Colonial Marine”’s not-so-great reception, it will be good for the “Alien” name to mean something positive again in terms of video games. It comes out to all modern platforms on Oct. 7, 2014.
For fans of action games and “Lord of the Rings,” “Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor” is an action game set in the “Lord of the Rings” universe. The story takes place between “The Hobbit” and the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and stars a ranger named Talion who is killed by Sauron’s forces. Talion is somehow summoned back to life with ghost-like powers to avenge his death. The game is an open world that allows players to travel to areas at their own pace and style. The game will be coming to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but the developers have stated that this game will be focusing on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It comes out to all Xbox and PlayStation platforms on Sept. 30, 2014 and PCs on Oct. 2, 2014.
