Student Spotlight: Sean Topacio

Name: Sean Topacio

Grade: Senior

Sociology major

Music minor

Why did you choose SNC?

I have always liked a smaller school setting, so that is what I limited my search to. St. Norbert College stood out to me, believe it or not, because of its emphasis on Communio. I felt accepted by everyone and could see the connection that everyone had with each other, the faculty and the school. Also, my brother came here so that was a factor.

What is your favorite band or musician? Why?

I am a vocalist, DJ and an amateur percussionist, so I would say that I am more musically inclined than the average person. That being said, it is hard for me to pick a favorite band because I like so many different genres. If you were to ask what my favorite rock artist is, I’d say Chris Cornell. Pop singer: Bruno Mars. Jazz vocalist: Sinatra. I don’t necessarily respect one more than the other; instead I respect their contribution to the genre they fall under. Sorry if that’s a little preachy.

If you could perform any song, what would it be?

I have been taking voice lessons for a couple years now and out of all of the genres I’ve sang, the jazz pieces are my favorite. Something about having a big band backing you up, the flexibility you have with the piece and the all around feel and swing of it makes that my favorite genre to perform. As for a song, I’ve always been a fan of “Come Fly With Me.” Classic.

What do you like to do when youre not performing or practicing?

When I’m not doing music I am juggling 17 credits, a job, an internship at the Brown County Jail, affiliation to two Greek groups, and friends/a girlfriend. Kind of a full schedule, but I like it that way. Keeps me busy so I don’t get lazy.

What is your favorite food?

My dad is from the Philippines so anything that his side of the family makes is amazing. My favorite is a dish called Chicken Adobo . . . Look it up. It’s awesome.

What is your quest?

One of my life goals is to spread creativity and influence others to do so as well. I believe that creative expression is something that is not exercised enough in our society which results in low self-esteem and self-worth.

Do you have any post college plans? If so, what are they?

After college I hope to work in rehabilitation in a juvenile detention facility, using music as a tool. Possibly go into music therapy.
