Some Musical Notes

Ben Behnke ’17 and Sara Gunderson ’17 performed their junior vocal recital on Friday, April 8 at 3:30 p.m. in Dudley Birder Hall.

Gunderson, a soprano, is a choral and general music education major. Her recital included “Nuit d’etoiles” by Claude Debussy, “V’adoro pupille” by George Frideric Handel and “Le secret” by Gabriel Faure. Gunderson stated that she was most excited to perform “O mio babbino caro” by Giacomo Puccini for the event.

Behnke is a baritone studying for a major in liberal arts with a music emphasis and a minor in leadership studies. He also plays the piano, percussion, tuba, trombone and Native American flute. Behnke’s favorite musical genre is classical.

Behnke’s recital included “Five Poems of Emily Dickinson” by Ernst Bacon, in which he sang two movements and Gunderson sang three. Behnke identified “Madamina, il catalogo e questo” from Mozart’s opera “Don Giovanni.”

Ben Olejniczak ’16 gave his senior vocal recital on Sunday, April 10 at 2 p.m. in Dudley Birder Hall. Olejniczak, a tenor, is a vocal performance major.

Olejniczak’s recital included “Laci darem la mano” from Mozart’s “Don Giovanni,” “Is Not His Word Like a Fire?” by Felix Mendelssohn, “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” by Ben Moore and “News has a kind of mystery” from John Adams’ opera “Nixon in China,” among other pieces. He identified the last song as his favorite for his recital.

The Chamber Music Concert occurred on Tuesday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Dudley Birder Hall. It featured performances from the college’s bell choir, directed by Dr. Linda Cook, and flute choir, directed by Dr. Kortney James.

Chloe Shepard ’17 and Allison Baranczyk ’17 performed their junior recital on Friday, April 15 at 3:30 p.m. in Dudley Birder Hall. Shepard gave a vocal performance while Baranczyk played the flute.

St. Norbert College’s Jazz Band performed its annual spring concert on Friday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Walter Theater. The ensemble was directed by Dr. Eric High.

A guest artist recital featuring mezzo-soprano Anna Parks occurred on Saturday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Dudley Birder Hall. Parks, a graduate student at Roosevelt University in Chicago, IL, was joined by Elaine Moss on piano and Andrew Parks on French horn.

The St. Norbert College Handbell Choir presented a concert on Sunday, April 17 at 1 p.m. in Dudley Birder Hall. The event featured traditional, contemporary and novelty pieces.

The Fresh Ink Composition Concert, featuring original works by music composition students at the college, was given on Tuesday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Dudley Birder Hall.

Upcoming musical events at St. Norbert College include the senior recital of Lauren Bendt ’16 on Sunday, April 24 at 2 p.m. in Dudley Birder Hall; the junior recital of Savannah Libassi ’17 and Brian Falk ’17 on Friday, April 29 at 3:30 p.m. in Dudley Birder Hall; the spring band concert on Friday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Walter Theater and the St. Norbert Honors Student Recital on Tuesday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Dudley Birder Hall. Attend one or more of these events and support the musical arts at SNC during the last few weeks of the semester!
