St. Norbert Pulls to .500 With Win Over LFC

FRANK CUSHMAN | SPORTS EDITOR

After starting the season an 0-2 the Green Knights bounced back when they crushed Knox two weeks ago. This week they welcomed Lake Forest College to Schneider stadium last Saturday in the Knights second conference game of the season. A strong first quarter helped the team roll to a 35-21 win over the Foresters. This is the Green Knights second straight victory and puts them at 2-2 on the season, 2-0 in conference play.

The Green Knight defense, who has been far improved in the last two games, turned in another solid performance and got the game off to a quick start. On the 6th play from scrimmage cornerback Tyler Jensen picked of Foresters QB Jagan Cleary at midfield returned it to the Lake Forest 47 to set up the offense with great starting position. They wasted no time by taking the ball to the endzone in 5 plays. After a huge 31 yard connecting between J.T. Crosby and Brett Olsen to put the Knights on the 10, two 5 yard rushes saw Crosby trot into the endzone for the first score.

After a blocked punt that saw the Foresters start with the ball on St. Norbert’s 38 the defense made a huge 4 down stand to give the ball back to Crosby and the offense. The ensuing drive lasted just 40 seconds when on the second play Crosby connected with Sam Staehling on a 49 yard TD reception the first collegiate TD in Staehling’s career. Crosby finished the quarter with another TD pass this one to Olsen from 3 yards out.

Crosby had another huge day throwing for 192 yards, two touchdowns and rushing for 89 yards adding another 2 touchdowns on the ground. Other top performers from the offensive side of the ball were Elijah Fort who ran for 108 yards capping his performance with a 56 yard touchdown which essentially put the game out of reach a 28-0 at the start of the second quarter. Brett Olsen had a big day, catching 7 passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. This was the second game in a row that the Green Knights have ran for more than 200 yards and not given up a sack. The shaky line play from the beginning of the season seems to have worked itself out.

On the defensive side of the ball Tyler Jensen continues to perform well adding another 2 interceptions to bring his season total to 4. Ryan Grandlic also shined leading the team with 10 tackles and a sac. Ben Kornowski added 4 tackles for a loss.

The Green Knights will travel to Beloit next week to take on the 2-3 Buccaneers. This will be another game that St. Norbert is expected to win, the Bucs lost to Lake Forest first game of the season and gave up 32 points to a paltry Knox offense. But conference games are never a write off and as the Knights look to repeat as champions this game is another test they must pass.
