Support for Sexual Assault Survivors

MADELEINE WENC | NEWS CORRESPONDENT

Women who have experienced sexual assault or relationship violence may feel very alone. At a time when survivors need it most, support groups can offer a place of safety, comfort and community with a group of individuals who have had similar experiences. St. Norbert College offers a support system for students to lean on if they wish to do so.

If you are a female survivor of sexual misconduct or  relationship violence, a support group  meets every Tuesday afternoon from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. in the Pennings Room inside Old St. Joseph’s Church. The group will continue to meet at the same time and place for the spring semester of 2017.  Anything said within the group is considered entirely confidential and private by the rest of the group.

With no limit on the number of students able to attend, any female students who feel the group may benefit them are welcome to attend. New members of the group are welcome to join at any time, and one-on-one counseling is available upon request.

During meetings, members discuss life stressors, are assisted in developing coping skills and are given an overall sense of community. The group is an important resource to assist in growth and healing. In a time when many survivors may feel lost, the group provides a safe space where survivors can meet other individuals going through similar struggles.

For now, the group is only open to female survivors of sexual assault. If an interest arises in a group for male survivors, one may be formed in the future.
