The Gift-Giving Season

‘Tis the season to be jolly…It’s the holiday season…the giving season.      Whatever it is you prefer to call the next few weeks leading up to Christmas, we’re in it! In a society that seems obsessed with material things (think of Black Friday shopping, Cyber Monday and hitting up every store at the last possible minute to buy the perfect gifts for loved ones), we often forget just how lucky most of us are.

Amid all the stress that comes along with holiday shopping and planning for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, more often than not we tend to complain about what is supposed to be but does not feel like“the most wonderful time of the year.” We often forget in this season centered on shopping, shopping and more shopping that there are many families in our own communities who may not have the option to shop till they drop. St. Norbert College has a plethora of opportunities for students to help give back to the De Pere community right here on campus.

The Student Athletic Advisory Committee is sponsoring the Midwest Conference Canned Food drive that runs until Dec. 7. Boxes for canned food donations can be found outside Ruth’s Marketplace, Phil’s, the PAC and in residence halls. Alternatively, one dollar may be donated which will be counted as the equivalent to two cans. The canned food will be donated to The Giving Tree Food Pantry and Freedom House, both in Green Bay.

SNC Knights for Life is hosting a toy drive for the Children’s Hospital. The group asks that all toys be new and unwrapped. Donation boxes are present in Todd Wehr Hall, the Campus Center and the first floor of Boyle Hall.

Old St. Joe’s reminds the community that St. Pat’s Pantry is in need of peanut butter and jelly as well as toothbrushes and toothpaste.

Take advantage of this holiday season and try and donate at least one of these items so that others in our community may be able to enjoy and celebrate Christmas a little more comfortably this year.
