Communio; it’s a phrase we often hear around the SNC campus. One of the core values of the Norbertines, Communio is the ideal of a community united as one. Part of being a community is reaching out, helping others and being committed to serving the community surrounding St. Norbert.
This month, campus has been rife with fundraisers and events whose purposes were all to support other organizations and causes, whether it is through fundraising and donations or organizing specific events.
The Student Athlete Advisory Counsel (SAAC) kicked off October football by hosting a 50/50 Raffle with the proceeds going to Hurricane Irma Relief. The student athletes were able to raise nearly $100 to send to help all those being affected by the damage wrought by one of the year’s most disastrous hurricanes.
The Zambia Project just hosted a successful Panera fundraiser. The SNC group partnered with Panera Bread and a certain percentage of all sales that mentioned the Zambia Project went to the club. Zambia Project is donating all these proceeds towards providing education to children in Zambia.
In honor of breast cancer awareness month, St. Norbert Cheerleading held a 50/50 raffle at the Oct. 21 game versus St. Lawrence where all proceeds went to the American Cancer Society. The cheerleaders usually host 50/50 raffles as their primary program fundraiser; however, they always pick a game in October to show their support for breast cancer awareness and donate those funds. This year they were able to raise over $400 to donate to the American Cancer Society.
Dance Marathon has been steadily increasing their fundraising presence on campus over the last few weeks. On Oct. 24, St. Norbert Dance Marathon partnered with Chipotle to host a fundraiser. Anyone who went to Chipotle at certain hours and mentioned Dance Marathon would then be donating a portion of their meal bill to Dance Marathon. The group also had their Miracle Minute of fundraising at the St. Norbert vs. Lawrence football game on Oct. 21. During halftime, Dance Marathon members roamed the stands for one minute, where game goers could then choose to give a donation if they wished.
These fundraisers are all leading up to the big Dance Marathon event on Nov. 11 in the Campus Center. This year, St. Norbert Dance Marathon has set the goal of raising $70,000 for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in Wisconsin. If you’d like to make a donation visit their website http://www.sncdancemarathon.com or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Colleges Against Cancer has also been busy planning their annual Run for Lungs 5k on Nov. 4. The run is $20 to register (students can receive a discount with code: STUDENT upon registration) and begins at 10 am. Participants receive a t-shirt as well as entry into a raffle. All proceeds from the Run for Lungs will benefit cancer research and support cancer patients.
These groups and many others on campus are truly living out Communio. Not only that, but they are providing an outlet for others on campus to think of communities outside of St. Norbert and help others.
Stay on the lookout for announcements in SNC News emails, campus mailboxes and posters around campus so that you too can join in the spirit of Communio and give back to others.
