One SNC club took steps against cancer this past weekend. On Saturday, Nov. 4, Colleges Against Cancer had its seventh annual 5K. Runners from Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota and Ohio gathered in the Campus Center, where participants were provided bagels, cream cheese, bananas and water as they waited for the race to begin at 10 a.m.

Due to the relatively dreary weather the count was lower than previous years, with the attendance reaching only 65 participants.

However, Matthew Matuszak ’18, the president of Colleges Against Cancer, said that overall “it was a great event [with] good turnout despite the weather, and we appreciate everyone running in the fight against cancer.”

After the race was completed, the top three men and women finishers were presented with medals. In the men’s category,  Andrew Brath ’19 (Brookfield, WI) finished at 19:38.2 minutes, Benjamin Van Handel ’20 (Hortonville, WI) finished at 19:44.4 and Ernesto Beltran ’20 (Round Lake Beach, IL) finished 20:08.6.

In the women’s category, Julia Novotny ’19 (De Pere, WI) finished at 20:26.9 minutes, Sarah Laufer ’18  (West Bend, WI) finished at 25:09.9 minutes and Ellie Olsen ’20 (Hobart, WI) finished at 25:09.9 minutes and Emily Olsen (Hobart, WI) finished at 25:20.4 minutes.

The Run for Lungs is a 5K course that can be walked or run by participants of all ages. For the second year in a row, the course began in front of the St. Norbert College Campus Center and followed a pre-marked path around the college campus. Due to the relatively small size of the campus, the course took two laps around the designated path.

The race cost $20 for each runner and $10 for SNC student runners. Proceeds of the run are kept by the club, which makes one large donation at the end of the year to the American Cancer Association. Tickets for the run were purchased online, at select dates in the Campus Center and on the morning of the run at the registration table.

At the run each runner received a t-shirt, free food and a raffle ticket that was entered into a drawing for prizes. This year’s prizes were donated by local businesses.

The prizes included dinner and a show at Melts With You and the Green Room Lounge, a Luna gift card package, a gift card to The Abbey, a Kwik Trip gift card, a Moscow Mule basket (for those participants 21 years and older) and a card for six gourmet cupcakes from The Cupcake Couture.

The Run for Lungs is organized by Colleges Against Cancer. Colleges Against Cancer is an on-campus organization comprised of students, faculty and staff of St. Norbert College that is dedicated to supporting the fight against cancer by increasing awareness of cancer and its devastating effects and raising funds for those affected by the disease.

The club’s two main events each year are the Run for Lungs 5K in the fall and Relay for Life in the spring. The funds raised by the club are donated to the American Cancer Association to support cancer research and benefit cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and their families, specifically in the De Pere and Green Bay communities.
